International Black Sea Day Activities 2010

High level representatives of the countries signatories to the Cornvention on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution (The Bucharest Convention) - Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, the Russian Federation, Turkey and Ukraine celebrated the International Black Sea Day - 31 October 2016 in Burgas, Bulgaria. The conference held marked the 20th Anniversary of the signature of the Strategic Action Plan for the Rehabilitation and Protection of the Black Sea.

Black Sea Medal Bulgaria

Commodore Prof. DSc Boyan Mednikarov

Commodore Prof. DSc Boyan Mednikarov  graduated from Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, Varna, Naval Academy "Admiral Kuznetsov", St. Petersburg, Russia and Rakovski Defence and Staff College, Sofia. His major fields of scientific research are Naval Operations Research, Force Structure Analysis, Model Building, Protection of Maritime Sovereignty and Environmental Protection.

He is a member of lot of national and international scientific organizations and editorial boards. Since 2009 he is president of the Union of Scientists, Varna branch. Also he is member of the executive board of IAMU (International Association of Maritime Universities). Since 2014 he became president of BSAMI (Black Sea Association of Maritime Institutions).

Prof. DSc Mednikarov is author of more than 190 scientific articles and papers, 2 monographs and 11 textbooks. He is guest professor in universities not only in Bulgaria, but also in Romania, Poland and Dubai.

Over 25 national and international projects have been successfully completed with his participation or under his leadership. He has been awarded five times with Scientific awards Varna in social and technical sciences.

In 2014-2016, the Naval Academy led by its rector Prof. DSc Mednikarov, performs as a beneficiary two major projects: "Innovative eco and energy-saving solutions in Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy" and "Integrated informational system in support of coastal zone management - IISSCZM".

Key qualifications: Mrs. Nino Sulkhanishvili had been working as a land cadastre and land use specialist at State Department of Land Management of Tbilisi for 8 years. She has been working as an expert environmentalist and social expert for different international projects  for 15 years. Her experience covers land use, environmental and social-economic issues. She has also wide experience of project managing. She can support the key personnel with GIS and environmental expertise.

  • Ph. D degree in Ecology and environment protection - "Contributions at the knowledge of heavy metals pollution consequences on marine ecosystems from Romanian Black Sea coast“, OVIDIUS University; 

Work experience: 1996-present, Scientist

Main activities and responsibilities: 

  • marine pollution monitoring and the effects of heavy metals pollution on marine ecosystem;
  • analytical aspects related to analyses of trace metals in marine samples (water, sediments, biota); • responsible of the national marine monitoring and assessment (PMA) programme, national focal point for PMA-Advisory Group/Black Sea Commission and for reporting data to European European Agency /WISE EIONET;
  • member of the NIMRD working group for implementation of MSFD (Marine Strategy Framework Directive) - responsible for descriptors 8 and 9 "Contaminants in water, sediment and biota"; • responsible for chapter " Indicators of contamination - Heavy metals", included in the annual report on state of marine and coastal environment;
  • responsible for elaboration of the weekly information bulletins on bathing water quality in the summer season  and their transmission to the central and local environmental authorities;
  • About 38 scientific publications

Ms. Tatiana G. TRIBRAT

Mrs. Tatiana G. TRIBRAT dedicated her life to raising of environmental awareness in the field of the protection of the Black Sea against pollution. Being the director of the Novorossiysk city junior NGO "Environmental Education Centre" AQUA she also worked with children on this subject. 

From 1995 till 2013 Ms. Tribrat initiated and implemented 15 environment projects: – Annual environmental camp " Caravan of Peace " (2001 - 2015) with participants from Novorossiysk, Stavropol, Krymsk, Krasnodar, Maikop, Taganrog, Nevinnomyssk, Moscow, St. Petersburg. The main task of the camp is to educate children how to preserve the Black Sea environment;

  •  Annual campaign "Clean the Black Sea Coast" that included not only cleaning the coast but also   exhibitions, competitions, children's scientific inquiries etc.;
  •  Ecobus - educational project (1998 - 2001) on the environmental problems of the Black Sea   coast cities;
  •  Ecological theater on the theme of tolerance "Step Forward";
  •  Family, social, and ecological tourism "Ecological and sports weekend trips";
  •  Environmental campaigns on the protection of the natural areas "Save Utrish", "Save   Sudzhukskaya   Laguna", "Save Pionerskaya Roscha", saving of city's green areas etc.
  •  Ms. Tribrat has been awarded  by 7 Rewards for her environmental activities

  • Modelling changes of the floristic composition and productivity parameters of     plant communities under eutrophication. 
  • Assessment the Ecological Status Class of the marine coastal ecosystems with use    morphofunctional parameters of the macrophytes community. 
  • Evaluation the responses of autotrophic community on the climatic change.
  • Management of water quality using the phytofooling on the artificial reefs. - Ukrainian ecological legislation (protected areas).
